Kmart closes its last full-size store Bridgehampton, New York
Bridgehampton, New York – During its heyday in the mid 90s, Kmart had over 2,000 stores throughout the world. But during the past decades it has been hard for the retailer’s blue light special to compete with other major retailers such as Walmart and Target.
Now in today’s growth of online retail Kmart has been struggling to maintain its presence in retail with its brick-and-mortar locations. Kmart’s Bridgehampton, New York, location is their last full-size store that exists. After the closing of this location there will still be smaller locations in Miami, Florida, and island locations such as Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
Kmart was founded in 1962 by Sebastian Spering Kresge. During the height of Kmart’s growth and success there were 2,486 stores around the world. Kmart incorporated the “Blue Light Special” in their marketing campaigns to advertise items that were on sale. In the store shoppers would find blue lights glaring for their attentions towards items that they were highlighting for available deals.
