Former President Jimmy Carter dies at 100
For four years, James Earl Carter Jr proudly led the United States as its 39th president, but for 100 years Carter was Georgia’s son and proudly served as its ambassador to the world community.
Life and peanuts
Born in Plains, Georgia, on October 1, 1924, Carter was the son of a peanut farmer, and a mother who worked as a registered nurse. Named after his father who was very stern. Carter shared in his 1975 autobiography, “Why Not The Best,” about a time as a child when he stole a penny out of the collection plate. After Carter’s father found out about the theft, he shared that his father physically disciplined so bad that he had never stole anything again in his life again.
After high school, Carter left the family farm and enrolled into the United States Naval Academy, and later became a marine in 1946. That same year of graduating from the Naval Academy Carter married Rosalynn who he stayed married to for 77 years.
After the death of Carter’s father n 1953, Carter resigned from the military and returned home to Plains, Georgia, take over the family farm. Both Carter and Rosalynn managed and grew their peanut farm operation to a profit.
Georgia’s Son
Outside of his farm life, Carter begins to get involved in local community efforts by first becoming the chairman of the Sumter County school board. Over the years, Carter develop political interest that helped him become more involved in the community. In a matter of a few short years, Carter rose from being a small town peanut farmer from Plains, Georgia. In 1962, Carter won a Georgia Senate seat, and in 1966, Carter was elected as the Governor of Georgia.
The Georgia Ambassador that served as the 39th President of the United States
From 1977 to 1981, President Jimmy Carter and his administration was responsible for the finding of the Department of Education and the United States Department of Energy, and many international efforts such as the Panama Canal Treaties, Camp David Accords, and more. But Carter made more of a name for himself after his term in office as an ambassador that was one of Georgia’s greatest representation.
The Carters opened the Carter Presidential Center in Atlanta 1982 and in 2002 Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work traveling across the globe to fight hunger, being behind peace negotiations, and more. In 1999, former President Bill Clinton award the Carter’s, President Carter and Rosalynn was honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
At over 100 years of age, Jimmy Carter lived on to have the most active post-presidency, and become more commonly known as Georgia’s ambassador son.
