69 million women may be at risk of losing their right to vote

Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act requires proof of citizenship when voting in federal elections

Representative Chip Roy of Texas introduced a bill called, “Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE),” on May 7, 2024 that would require voters to show proof of their United States citizenship before being able to vote in federal elections. One would believe that showing proof of their citizenship is an easy task to do, but this newly proposed method of showing proof of one’s citizenship may be a problem for 69 million American women.

If passed, the law will require people to show documented proof of not only of their identity, but also of their citizenship. Many are concerned about how this would affect millions of women who has changed their last names after marriage and don’t have citizenship documents that addresses their new identity.

CBS News spoke to, Greta Bedekovics, associate director of democracy policy at the Center for American Progress. Bedekovics suggested that women who have changed their names because of marriage should obtain ceritified copies of their marriage certificates and keep any change of name documentation.
