Ricky Henderson was the Major League Baseball’s base stealing king
He was a Hall of Famer and Major League Baseball’s all-time base-stealing king. Henderson played in the league for 25 years and for 13 teams. He served three different stints with the Oakland Athletics that originally drafted him in 1979.
Born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1958, Henderson’s family moved to Oakland, where Henderson developed his love for playing baseball. Henderson holds the modern single-season stolen base record with 132 in 1982; he continues to hold the most leadoff home runs with 81 and set the career record for stolen bases in 1991 with 939.
Pamela Henderson, the wife of Henderson, provided a statement announcing his death: “A legend on and off the field, Rickey was a devoted son, dad, friend, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a truly humble soul.” Pamela goes on to say, “Rickey lived his life with integrity, and his love for baseball was paramount. Now, Rickey is at peace with the Lord, cherishing the extraordinary moments and achievements he leaves behind.”
