A new bill from State Assemblymember Matt Haney could soon make history for the San Francisco-born icon. AB 2455 proposes designating May 17 as Bruce Lee Day. Consequently, this legislation would honor the legendary martial artist’s deep roots in the Bay Area and his global impact on culture.
If the bill passes, Lee will become the first Chinese-American commemorated with a dedicated day in California state law. Specifically, the date marks his 1959 return to the U.S. to claim his citizenship. From co-founding an Oakland dojo to creating Jeet Kune Do, Lee remains a symbol of resilience. Because he bridged so many cultures, this recognition feels long overdue for many Californians.
