How the retail giant is deploying AI tools and free certifications from Google and OpenAI to empower its entire U.S. and Canadian workforce

Walmart has deployed AI-powered tools via its associate app to 1.5 million U.S. store workers, streamlining daily tasks and boosting efficiency. Key features include AI-driven task management that cuts shift planning time from 90 minutes to 30 for overnight stocking, real-time translation in 44 languages for customer interactions, and an upgraded conversational AI handling over 3 million daily queries like processing returns.

These tools, powered by Walmart’s proprietary Element platform, also incorporate augmented reality with RFID for apparel stocking, reducing backroom time.

Comprehensive Workforce Training

Walmart is investing nearly $1 billion in skills training through 2026, including free AI programs for its entire frontline and office workforce. Recent initiatives feature an eight-hour Google AI Professional Certification course on fundamentals like research and app building, accessible via Walmart Academy, and a customized OpenAI Certification launching in 2026.

This upskilling aims to enhance productivity, career growth into higher roles, and AI fluency amid industry shifts, with over 900,000 associates already using related tools weekly.

Business Impact and Results

AI adoption has driven operational gains, with 60% of stores receiving automated shipments and tools like the customer-facing Sparky agent boosting order values by 35%. In Q4 FY26, Walmart reported 5.6% revenue growth to part of its $713 billion fiscal year, crediting AI for inventory accuracy and sales momentum.

CEO John Furner emphasized AI’s role in agentic commerce, enabling associates to focus on high-value tasks while projecting 6-8% operating income growth for FY27.
