House Jan 6 Committee accuses Donald Trump of four crimes and recommends prosecution
Washington, D.C. – After a year and a half of testimonies concerning the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capital. The House Jan 6 committee has decided to recommend charging former President Donald Trump with obstruction of an official proceeding, conspiracy to defraud the United States, conspiracy to make a false statement and efforts to incite, assist, or aid or comfort an insurrection.
There is no guarantee that Trump will actually be indicted on these charges. But the special counsel, Jack Smith, and the Justice Department are already investigating Trump on their own and this could add to their investigation.
Yahoo News reports that an investigator with the House Committee wrote in the report, “Even if it were true that President Trump genuinely believed the election was stolen, this is no defense. No president can ignore the courts and purposely violate the law no matter what supposed ‘justification’ he or she presents.”
The House Jan 6 Committee is made up of nine different House Of Representatives; Seven Democrats ad two Republicans. Bennie Thompson (D-Mississippi) serves on the committee as the Chair and Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) serves as the Vice Chair.
