The Kroger and Albertsons merger faces Senate scrutiny

Kroger, the nation’s largest grocery retailer is in an uphill battle to acquire Alberstons

A $24.6 billion deal that could create over 5,000 stores nationwide and develop an annual revenue of $200 billion is being questioned. The merger that is bound to force major changes throughout the country from coast to coast is now under a senate microscope. Many senators are questioning the proposed merger and how it could affect various communities, both residential and business.

Both, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders, have come forward to express their concerns of the merger and how it could create higher prices for customers because of less competition. Senator Warren shared on her Twitter account, “Giant grocery chains have been jacking up prices on food and using inflation as a cover to fatten profits. If the @Kroger & @Albertsons deal goes through, this could hit consumers with higher prices. We need more competition, not more concentrated power.”
